Presentation

HyLab– Green Hydrogen Collaborative Laboratory – is a private, non-profitassociation whose mission is to drive innovation and technological developmentthroughout the entire green hydrogen value chain, promoting a sustainableenergy transition. As a key player throughout the hydrogen value chain, HyLab'sR&D&I agenda is structured around four pillars:

(1)    sustainable green hydrogen economy, exploring andpromoting business models aligned with national and international goals;

(2)    hydrogen production technologies, providing extensiveknowledge and testing capabilities of the various existing conventional andalternative processes;

(3)    storage, transportation and distribution of hydrogen,enabling the study and evaluation of the performance of operations with the aimof reducing costs, ensuring safety conditions and mitigating potential risks;and

(4)    hydrogen applications, including technical andeconomic developments, quantitative risk assessment, as well as integrationwith other renewable energy sources;

Workingin close collaboration with the business ecosystem, universities and researchcentres, HyLab aims to strengthen competitiveness through applied research, thedevelopment of advanced solutions and the transfer of knowledge, with a view todecarbonizing the economy and meeting energy and climate goals.

Role in the project

HyLabacts role across several transversal activities of the project, contributingboth technical leadership and multidisciplinary expertise. HyLab leads thedevelopment of the techno-economic roadmap targeting an LCOH reduction towards2 €/kg by 2030, addressing electrolyser CAPEX optimisation, renewable LCOEreduction, and broader cost drivers financing, and risk mitigation. It alsosupports the societal impact assessment through a social life cycle analysisaligned with international sustainability standards, contributing tostakeholder engagement and awareness campaigns on hydrogen safety andpotential. HyLab further participates in the environmental impact evaluationassociated with the conversion of the coal-fired power plant, supportinganalyses of contamination, climate change, circular economy, and publicacceptance. In parallel, it leads the elaboration of the scale-up guideline ofthe hydrogen production by 2030, consolidating outcomes from regulatory,technical, operational, and techno-economic workstreams into a phased capacityexpansion strategy. HyLab also contributes to defining export strategies forrenewable hydrogen from Sines to European and international markets, assessingshipping routes, energy carriers, and natural gas blending alternatives. Acrossthese activities, HyLab acts as a key integrator, bridging technical, economic,environmental, and societal dimensions to ensure the project's alignment withlong-term decarbonisation and competitiveness goals.

Relevant Previous Projects

H2tALENT (Horizon Europe)

It launches a flagship Hydrogen Valley in Alentejo-PT to consolidate a stronginvestment in place and boost the penetration of green hydrogen by deployingnew initiatives across the entire value chain from local production to useincluding distribution for a range of applications in industry, mobility andbuildings while also connecting with existing/planned infrastructures andinitiatives.

HySeas (Horizon Europe)

HySEas introduces an innovative approach to direct seawater electrolysisthrough the integration of a Bipolar Membrane (BPM), incorporating both acation exchange layer akin to a proton exchange membrane (PEM) and an anionexchange layer similar to anion exchange membrane (AEM) as well as a waterdissociation catalyst layer, within a Bipolar Membrane Water Electrolyser(BPMWE) device.

H2GreenValley (Recovery and Resilience Fund)

It establishes Portugal's first green hydrogen hub in Sines, aiming todecarbonize industries and reduce energy dependence by creating an entire greenhydrogen value chain. It includes developing infrastructure for H2 production,transmission, and distribution, promoting its use in residential and industrialsectors, and blending it with natural gas. The project, set for commissioningby late 2025, supports Portugal's National Hydrogen Strategy and contributes toa sustainable, green economy.

SinesH2GreenValley (Recovery and Resilience Fund)

It consists in productive projects for the installation of 2 green H2production units (91 MW and 1.5 MW), 2 multifuelling stations at Sines, and thedevelopment of a Renewable Energy Community. HyLab responsibilities are thecharacterization and collaboration on the development Fusion Fuel’s nextgeneration of electrolysers. HyLab develops testing procedures for intensive,continuous and long duration testing of stacks and cells.
