320 million in green hydrogen projects await auction

EDP, part of the GreenH2Atlantic consortium, and Hyperion Renewables are developing projects in Sines and Setúbal and are waiting for the green hydrogen auction this year.

GreenH2Atlantic is one of the two green hydrogen projects which represents investments of more than 300 million Euros and is waiting for the auction that should be launched in the second half of the year.

The consortium led by EDP and GALP, with various national and international partners, is developing the GreenH2Atlantic project.

Ana Quelhas, Managing Director for Hydrogen, from EDP, revealed that “the total predicted investment is 300 million Euros divided between renewable energies and the electroliser.”

She explained to the journalist that the objective is to build an 100MW electroliser, which will require a mix of 100MW of wind energy and 100MW of solar energy. “The project is being developed from the technical engineering part, working in parallel with infrastructures, water and electricity connections.”

GreenH2Atlantic – which will be installed in the land of EDP’s former coal plant in Sines – has already received 30 million Euros of EU funds, but more is needed to lever the project, with the consortium being attentive to the national auction, which has been publicised, but no date has yet been defined.

The project is considered a project of national interest (PIN). Part of the hydrogen in this project is aimed at the GALP refinery in Sines, to replace the existing grey hydrogen and to serve for injection in the national gas transport network, replacing an equivalent quantity of natural gas energy.
